Author: Manondenbosch

Excessive humidity in the home can be detrimental to both the structure of the dwelling as well as the health of the occupants.  The solution to this problem can be found with Portable Dehumidifiers because they are small and can be transported from one room to the other – wherever they are needed to make the room comfortable.  Furniture doesn't need to be rearranged, nor is additional plumbing required in order to remove the excess moisture from the air and restore comfort to the home again.

Historical Viewpoint

Modern day dehumidifiers were first conceived in the early 20th century by an engineer named Carrier, but the concept, and original concept were actually envisioned during the Han Dynasty in China around the second century when Ding Huane created a fan consisting of seven wheels that were nine feet in diameter and manually powered.  The idea grew over the centuries and other inventors during the Tang Dynasty actually has a "cool" hall that was "air conditioned" by a wheels that were powered by water and jet streams from a fountain.  Throughout the centuries people expanded on these ideas and air conditioning and dehumidifiers were finally designed and built with efficiency during the 20th century, and have been quite popular ever since.

Features

Since there are many rooms throughout the home that may actually experience high humidity levels over other rooms in the house, a Portable Dehumidifier is probably the best solution for home owners to restore comfort to the home.  There are several features that consumers need to ensure are included in the unit, such as an automatic shut off for the water container so that when it's full the device shuts off to avoid spillover.  A full container indicator is also a necessity for these portable units if there not a hose available for continuous draining.  A humidistat on the device is also important for the dwellers to be able to set a comfortable humidity level so that the room is not too moist or too dry.  An air filter, variable fan speeds, wheels on the units, on/off switch, and minimal noise should also be included in the unit that is to be purchased.

Recommended Devices

There are a number of manufacturers who make Portable Dehumidifiers and the best are generally the types that remove up to 70 pints of water each day.  One of the highest recommended models is made by Soleus Air and is the DP1-70-03 because it consistently gets exceptional reviews from consumers.  It's designed to be energy efficient, and has an Energy Star certification, as well as convenient controls on an electronic panel, variable speeds on the fans, and automatic shut off when the container is full.  Numerous consumers said it's fantastic to get the musty smell and moisture out of every room to which it is transported.

Another highly rated model is made by Frigidaire and it's their model FDF70S1 that also removes up to 70 pints of water a day from the room.  It contains a variable speed fan, which is effective to remove the moisture from the rooms and restoring comfortable, and healthy home conditions for the family.

When consumers don't want a whole house dehumidifier (or it's not in the budget), the Portable Dehumidifiers can be the best solution for the family removing moisture, mold, mildew, and annoying insects.

Whole House Dehumidifiers - Making the entire house healthy again

Author: Manondenbosch

Homes come in an infinite number of styles and sizes, but the one thing they have in common is that humidity can be a nuisance.  Sometimes Whole House Dehumidifiers are the best option to restore comfort to the home again, as well as help remove the mold, mildew, and discourage the disease carrying insects from making it a permanent dwelling.  These types of dehumidifiers are some of the most convenient for homeowners because there is little they need to do to maintain the system, and they don't have to move it from room to room.

Historical Info

Probably the most uncomfortable, damp humid dwellings since the beginning of time have been the caves that the cave men and women lived in.  Just think about how much they would have appreciated having a dehumidifier to make those caves more comfortable.  They threw animal skins on the floor to sleep on, warm enough, but that didn't help the humidity in the cave.

Not a lot has changed in millions of years, the "cave home" can still be damp and uncomfortable, and  humans may have evolved from having to sleep on animal skins on a cave floor, but mold, mildew, and cockroaches still thrive in those damp dark places.  The Chinese found a way to combat the dampness with manual fans, but it wasn't until the 20th century before man actually invented a more convenient method to make our modern "caves" more comfortable by inventing the dehumidifier.

How They Work

When an extraordinary amount of humidity is in the home, a Whole House Dehumidifier is one of the best ways to remove the moisture from the house.  These devices are generally attached to the air conditioner or furnace, and they automatically monitor the humidity in the entire home and lower the humidity to the desired setting.  They are connected to the drainage system of the home, so there's no container to empty, and no hose to connect to a drain.  Generally, they are significantly more expensive, but they are also appreciably less trouble.  They work the same as all others work by cooling the air and collecting the moisture in the air as condensation, into the tank.

Recommended Models

There are numerous manufacturers who make these Whole House Dehumidifiers, but some are more highly rated than others.  One such model is the Oscar Air DB105 which has some of the best features and is extremely efficient, more compact than many competitors, and is very quiet when it is running.  It actively removes up to 105 pints of water each day and can effectively cover up to 20,000 cubic feet.

The humidistat is built into the unit along with a defrost unit that prevents the model from icing up during cold temperatures.  It also supports a MERV-8 or a MERV-11 air filter to remove contaminants.  Another model that is highly rated is the Santa Fe Max Dry Basement and Whole House Dehumidifier which has the capability of removing up to 150 pints of water in the home daily.  This model can operate in low temperatures, is highly efficient for energy usage, and it has the automatic humidistat required for larger models.

Solutions Galore

For the convenience of removing the humidity from the entire home, Whole House Dehumidifiers are the best solution for stabilizing humidity and making the home more comfortable for everyone.

In some locations, there is little difference in humidity.

Whole House Dehumidifier and Room Dehumidifiers

Author: Darren Pace

If you live in humid area, moisture can get inside your home and can worsen allergies and can cause mold to develop in certain areas of your home. Certain types of mold can cause more than just allergies; black mold can be very deadly to breathe for long periods of time. Therefore,  it is helpful to use a whole house dehumidifier help to reduce the moisture in the rooms of your home, which improve allergies and reduce the risk of molds growing in your home.

Maintenance Aspect to the Dehumidifiers

Both the whole house dehumidifier and room dehumidifier require very little maintenance. Typically, you just need to regularly clean the various parts and it will give you years of service. The inside coils of the dehumidifier should be cleaned annually, but if you live a super humid area, you may want to clean these twice a year. You can use an attachment to your vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt and then wash the coils with a spray brush, which will get rid of the rest of the buildup.

In addition, once or twice per year, you will want to take off the front grill and use soapy warm water to rinse the dirt off of it. There is also a filter in this area that will need washing or replacing every so often, so be sure to check it when you are doing your annual cleaning. The final step in cleaning your whole house dehumidifier is removing and cleaning out the reservoir where the excess moisture is expelled into. Keeping these clean cuts down on the amount of minerals that can be deposited over long periods of time.

Before you begin your room dehumidifier maintenance, make sure you unplug it from the wall to prevent any chance of electric shock. Keep in mind that your whole house dehumidifier is running 24 hours a day, so just check on it every once in a while or mark the maintenance schedule on your calendar so that you remember to keep it cleaned annually.

When running your dehumidifier make sure it is not backed up against a wall or a window because this will block the airflow, and in order to get the most from your unit, you want the best airflow you can get. Many of the whole house dehumidifier units have an indicator to allow you to specify where you want the humidity set in your home; it should be set anywhere between 40 and 50 percent. Too much humidity can make it difficult to sleep because the air is too heavy, which can lead to allergy symptoms. On the other hand, if there is not enough humidity it can lead to dry skin and coughing, so make sure to monitor the humidity level in your home frequently.

Three Things To Evaluate Before Buying Dehumidifiers For Home

Author: Alger Finch

If you live in a humid climate...you know how miserable life can get. When the temperature rises filled with humidity, so rises the discomfort. However, there are solutions to these frustrating weather conditions. Within the comfort of your home a dehumidifier can make all the difference.

There is an easy fix to this problem within a home. The simple solution is to control the humidity. And that is done with a dehumidifier. Water or moisture in the air is what makes the difference between comfort and misery. So if the humidity is 70% vs. 40% on a 95 degree temperature day...it will be much more uncomfortable.

You can control the humidity level in a home or office space by a dehumidifier. It is conceivable to alter the humidity within a building as much as 30 to 50 percent. And this change in relative humidity can make a huge comfort difference. When it comes to sleeping...it can make the difference between a peaceful nights rest.

A home dehumidifier provides the quick solution to this discomfort. The question is...what is the best dehumidifier for your situation? There isn't really a one size fits all solution. It depends on your personal situation. But this question is relatively easy to solve.

You want to keep these three things in mind before you begin your search. You might say this is the starting point.

  • Area - Dehumidifiers are designed to change humidity levels based on functional space. In other words you need to know the square footage area of the room you are putting the unit in. Is the home dehumidifier for an entire house or for a small room. This is important to take into consideration before beginning your shopping.
  • Placement - Where will you be locating the dehumidifier. These units basically suck water from the air. Which means they have to collect it in a fill bucket. That water will need to be dumped on a regular bases. So you will want a location that is convenient for this regular maintenance. Near a drain is an important consideration.
  • Sound Volume - A dehumidifier is a machine. This simply means it makes noise. Some dehumidifiers are more quiet than others. But when you are considering location of the unit...you'll want to keep this in mind.

You don't want to be an impulsive buyer when it comes to purchasing a house dehumidifier. Like other products...manufactures like to offer bells and whistle. The problem with this is...too often consumers don't necessarily need the added bells...or even know the purpose of the whistles. So before a sales person goes ringing and tooting, answer the above three questions.

If you will spend a little time investigating dehumidifiers...you may save yourself a great deal of heart ache. And the great thing is, the Internet provides a quick means of gathering helpful information. Just plug the word dehumidifier in your favorite search engine and see what you come up with.

Can A Dehumidifier For Home Use Reduce Moisture Levels From Your Home

Author: David Bruyere

Is there a lot of moisture present at your home? Do you often notice mold growth, damp clothes and lots of insects around your house? If that's the case, read on. Those things have happened to me as well. The solution lies in investing in a dehumidifier for home use.

Consider your dehumidifier purchase as an investment. It will help protect your house from the problems excess humidity can cause. Kids tend to get sick often if the humidity levels are unregulated and insects start breeding like crazy. Your home becomes a breeding haven for lots of insects.

The key is in the balance of humidity levels. Picking a powerful dehumidifier for home use is absolutely essential if you live in an extremely humid climate. But if there's excess humidity in your bathrooms, a mini-dehumidifier is your answer.

With that said, here's how to pick a suitable dehumidifier for home use and gain control of humidity levels....

1. Identify your needs - The first step is to know why you really need a dehumidifier. When you know what kind of issues you are having in your house, you can pick a suitable dehumidifier. If you feel stuffy everywhere inside the house, you'll have to pick a whole house dehumidifier. If dampness is present in just a single room, you'll have to choose a mini-dehumidifier.

There are lots of dehumidifiers on the market that are designed to serve particular needs. If you are looking to use it in a medium sized room, you'll have to go for an unit that can absorb at least 50-70 pints of moisture. If you are looking to use the unit in your bathroom or kitchen, I recommend a dehumidifier that can remove about 20-30 pints of water from air.

2. Don't go based on cost - Most of the dehumidifiers that cost less than a hundred bucks work for a while but they ultimately fail. Purchasing a dehumidifier is an investment rather than a liability.

You won't be needing the dehumidifier if you were to live in a location that had considerably lower level of humidity than this.

I didn't care at first about high levels of humidity and didn't purchase a dehumidifier early on. There was excessive dampness in the house for just a few months each year. But after we had our kid and noticed that he was getting sick often, we called in an expert. The humidity levels were high and my son was having allergies.

Even though our walls were wet and there were lots of insects around the house, we didn't care about purchasing a dehumidifier until we noticed our child getting sick. We've invested in a dehumidifier for home use with 70 pint capacity.

We don't experience any dampness at home as a result of investing in it. We are glad that we invested in an efficient dehumidifier for home use. Our house is completely protected now. Otherwise, the damages could have been severe. If there's a lot of humidity in your locality, We strongly recommend that you buy a dehumidifier.

The Excellent Basement Dehumidifiers and Whole House Dehumidifiers

Author: Nick Valenzuela

The main big difference concerning the two is that the SaniDry version has to be put in by 1 of these certified installers, normally as piece of a larger basement re-modelling or enhancing challenge. The Advance can be bought "off the shelf" and for lots of crawl spaces requires minor extra than to be connected to a energy socket and the continuous drainage process set up.

The Aprilaire 1710 is a worthy and revered competitor and a viable alternate if the Advance is regarded unsuitable.

Last but not least we have the Santa Fe Max Dry Twin XT Crawl Area Dehumidifier with a hefty h2o extraction rate of a hundred and fifty pints, matched in dimension, probably, only by its identify. For a seriously significant crawl space this beast of a machine has no rival. Luckily this dehumidifier is exceptionally capable so certainly the lack of preference does not make a difference too a great deal.

So, the levels of competition for the most effective crawl space dehumidifier is not rather a one particular horse race but, of the 5 starters at the gate, three bear the colors of the Santa Fe stable.

Does your basement actually odor like a basement, damp and musty? Have you attempted working with dehumidifier but the scent and damp feeling persist? Then you will need to consider the Santa Fe dehumidifier. This outstanding dehumidifier will dry out your basement and also do away with people musty odors. In point they ensure this.

Moisture in the residence arrives numerous sources such as plants, pets, men and women, cooking, washing, ground h2o, and most importantly, the air. Also the moisture from the exterior air that penetrates the house is adequate to overwhelm most residential dehumidifiers. The volume of moisture in the air is referred to as to the humidity. It is the pounds of the h2o found in a pound of air. The moisture in the air or humidity is continuously hoping to equalize all through the residence. If there is a lot more humidity upstairs, it functions it's way downstairs, and vice versa. A substantial-capacity dehumidifier is needed to ensure that enough moisture is taken out to protect against mildew, mildew, and bacterial development. In some areas of the nation this is a even larger problem than others.

When the relative humidity stage rises over fifty five%. It stimulates the expansion of mold, mildew, bacteria and other biological allergens that deliver all those widespread and perfectly-well-known musty and damp basement odors. Lowering the relative humidity eliminates individuals odors.

There are lots of benefits of possessing a Santa Fe humidifier and they incorporate.

  • The Santa Fe dehumidifier adds a little warmth to the basement air. So a cold, damp basement gets a little hotter and a lot drier and won't odor like a basement.

Lots of rooms, specifically basements, normally get down to colder temperatures and many dehumidifiers are not advisable for use for temperatures below 65 or 70 degrees. The Santa Fe humidifier can run in temperatures as minimal as 55 degrees and nevertheless sustain the relative humidity among 45-fifty%.

The Santa Fe removes up to a hundred pints of water a day, this is 3 occasions as considerably as a standard dehumidifier. This drinking water is sent by means of the gravity drain hose to a floor drain for elimination. This hose can be extended employing one/2" pvc pipe.

Why Dehumidify? Things You Must Know

Author: Herman White

In today’s heavily industrialized world, there are a lot of reasons why you’d want to keep all your doors and windows tightly closed. Pollution and outsiders are just some of the things that you want to keep out of your home. But keeping all of those things out also means keeping other things like moisture in your house, and that could get troublesome. It’s a good thing that dehumidifiers are an accessible solution to that problem.

What’s a Dehumidifier?

They’re basically small home appliances that lower the humidity – the amount of water vapor in the ambient air – by sucking out water. They come in two forms – mechanical and chemical – and they’re the best solution you could find for your indoor humidity issues.

A mechanical unit combines an air conditioner and a heater into a single apparatus. Moist air is drawn into the machine, which then cools it to make the water vapor condense. The drier, colder air is heated as it exits through the rear of the machine. Chemical dehumidifiers, on the other hand, use substances known as desiccants, which have a natural ability to absorb the water from the surrounding air.

Do You Need a Dehumidifier?

You may not realize it yet, but there’s a very good chance that you do need a dehumidifier in your home. Comfort would probably be your first consideration when getting a unit. After all, few people like the muggy feeling of a humid area, that sticky sensation you get on a hot and humid day. Even a small portable dehumidifier can alleviate that problem to some extent.

Keeping the humidity in check will also control the other things that like humid areas – like mold, for example. Mold and mildew just love places with high moisture content, and you’re bound to find them growing on organic surfaces in humid areas. When you zap the humidity out of the air, you’re not just depriving them of the water they need. You also disable them from releasing their spores, which can cause severe allergies.

Mold and mildew are likely to be your biggest problem when you live in a very humid environment. They cause more than their fair share of problems: their spores can trigger life-threatening allergies, they tend to destroy the surface they latch on to, and they’re not very attractive to boot.

Dehumidify These Spaces

Unless you’re getting a whole house dehumidifier (i.e. the kind that hooks into the HVAC), you’ll have to prioritize which rooms and spaces should get dehumidified in your home. You can only spend so much on these things, after all, so you may as well spend your money efficiently.

The first and biggest candidate is your basement or cellar. It has the combination of dark and damp that mold and mildew just love, so zapping out the humidity there is a big priority. Other places where you work with water, such as a laundry room, will also benefit a lot from having a dehumidifier installed.

Beside basement dehumidifiers, it’s also a good idea to install one in spaces like the living room, where you and your household tend to spend a lot of time. There’s the obvious plus in terms of comfort, and then there’s the health benefit of not having mold and mildew there to trigger allergic reactions. In the same vein, other ‘family rooms’ like your den or recreation room should also be candidates to get a dehumidifier.

Typically, the best dehumidifier to get for any room is proportional to the size of the room. A bigger room would thus call for a bigger dehumidifier. But if you’re not sure about the size to get, the safest choice would be to get the larger size. That way, you’re fairly sure that it’s within the unit’s capacity to dehumidify your room or space.
